There are ten main classes in the Dewey Decimal System and each covers a broad field of human knowledge.  Each main class is further subdivided, from general to specific topics. In Belk Library, items with call numbers from 0-400's are located on the second floor and call numbers from 500-900's are located on the third floor.

The main classes are as follows:

  • 000 – General works, Computer science and Information
  • 100 – Philosophy and psychology
  • 200 – Religion
  • 300 – Social sciences
  • 400 – Language
  • 500 – Pure Science
  • 600 – Technology
  • 700 – Arts & recreation
  • 800 – Literature
  • 900 – History & geography
